Ecopedagogy or shale gas in Bulgaria: new perspectives for a sustainable revolution

I interviewed the President of the brand new Bulgarian Centre for Sustainable Local Development and Ecopedagogy, Stefan Grigorov, who established the center in December 2011, together with a team of young Bulgarian researchers in the field of the green economy. He was a brilliant colleague of mine at the Faculty of Sociology, at the University of Trento (Italy).Let’s read what he reveled:
1. Hello Stefan. Thank you for your kindness. I would like to ask you how it comes the idea of the Bulgarian Centre for Sustainable Local Development and Ecopedagogy?
Silvia, firstly thank you for the invitation to speak about the Bulgarian Centre for Sustainable Local Development and Ecopedagogy! BCSLDE is a result of the ethical and democratic vision of young Bulgarian experts and their international activity in the field of Ecopedagogy and Sustainability. We felt that we need an organization in Bulgaria and in the World that could work at both local and global level. In this regard, our missions are two:
- to support local communities and local governments as initiate and realize local, regional and international sustainability ecopedagogy projects by enhancing Euro-cooperation and launching inter-continental cooperation programs;
- to work actively to contribute to the creation of a new sustainable Ecopedagogy-driven civilization all over the world. That is the idea and the purpose that inspires us.
2. Bulgaria attracts international investors because of its giant resources; anyhow the latest win against the entry of Chevron in the country is a clear signal that the population wants to preserve this pristine land. What do you think about that?
Yes, I would perfectly agree that we are a small country but we have “giant” resources in the sense of an extraordinary beautiful Nature, extremely fruitful land, thousands of thermal springs and mineral water and a really great biodiversity! The water soon will cost more than the gold… People in Bulgaria still love Nature and their life and they proved it.
In Bulgaria life is based on Nature, that is why thousands of young Bulgarians have protested for months in more than 14 cities in Bulgaria as well as in the major European and world capitals against the plans of Chevron and other companies to destroy our nature and respectively our life. I say “destroy” because our government granted permission to Chevron to seek for shale gas in our most fruitful land ” Dobruja“. This land was giving the bread to the Roman Empire, then to the Ottoman Empire. From ancient times this land is famous with its fruitfulness, and nobody who is normal wants to turn it into a gasland desert!
Here we have also the specifics that the biggest underground fresh water lake on the Balkans is exactly in Dobruja where they wanted to drill! This would poison all of Bulgaria,that is why here for first time, there was a situation of national ecological revolution.
Tomorrow there will be a protest to the Romanian embassy in Bulgaria, because we share this underground lake, and if Romania doesn’t ban the method of “hydraulic fracturing” and Chevron they will lead to new eco-catastrophes on the Balkans.
3. Within the BCSLDE, how do the Ecopedagogy can change the perspectives of the future generations in Bulgaria?
Bulgaria is a small country and, for this reason, it is always dependent on the politics of dominant countries such as USA and Russia. From this perspective, to change today your country for better means to change the world for better, to fight for a better world!
Ecopedagogy is exactly a project for a new planetary civilization based on peace, democracy, justice and green economy that is not in the hands of multinationals and state monopolies but in the hands of people.
Concretely, we have ecopedagogy projects for Schools in Bulgaria that will radically improve the ecological consciousness of children and will result in practical transformation towards green economy and green future.
We also have prepared projects for Sustainability parks and eco-villages that will turn Bulgaria in a leading country in the field of Sustainability. We will show to the world that people still can preserve their Nature, their land, their life as they dream for it and their sovereignty from multinationals.

What I would like to say to people is to dream, to love, to believe in themselves and to fight for a better world with Nature and smiles. If they don’t, who does? Everybody must know that small people can do great things! Let’s start!
